Abstract:
This seminar will overview the area of data mining, placing it in context with sister disciplines. Some of the major data mining approaches will be overviewed and then on-going and current work at Manchester will be briefly examined.
Bio:
John Keane holds the MG Singh Chair in Data Engineering in the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester and is an Honorary Professor of Data Analytics at Manchester Business School. His work in high performance data analysis has received more than £10M in funding from the EU and the UK (HM Treasury, Ministry of Defence, Qinetiq, Technology Strategy Board, a number of research councils and industry).
Keane has had various spells working in industry with, amongst others, the Trustees Savings Bank, Philips Data Systems and ICL, now Fujitsu. Work on statistical disclosure has led to software used by the UK Office for National Statistics and, under licence, by the Singaporean Ministry of Trade and Industry; Keane has also acted as a consultant for the UN/World Bank. He is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems and IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics-Part C.
