Jean-Baptiste Oudry was director of the Beauvais Tapestry Works, the foremost painter of animals and landscapes in the second third of the 18th century, and one of the major players in French visual culture under Louis XV. Colin Bailey, chief curator at the Frick Collection in New York, sketches the career of this extraordinary artist. Complements the exhibition Oudry's Painted Menagerie.
