An Idiot for Dinner - Play. Sanjay Khavlekar and his friends meet every Wednesday evening, where they each have to bring- An Idiot for Dinner.' They have a good laugh at the Idiots' expense. At the end of the dinner the host with the biggest Idiot wins, while the Idiots never figure who the joke was on. To one such dinner, Sanjay invites Mr. R. Golden Gopu, an income tax officer who has an obsession for making matchstick models of the wonders of India . Just hours before the dinner, Sanjay twists his back and has to stay home. Mr. Golden Gopu makes a house call and Sanjay's wife, who gets very upset with her husband's idea of amusement, leaves him. As Gopu tries to help Sanjay's sore back and mend his broken heart, the evening runs out of control. The idiot manages to make Sanjay's back problem worse, bring his French mistress home, drive his wife into the arms of a sex fiend and get him income tax audited. The evening truly goes haywire as Sanjay's wife gets into a car accident, his mistress threatens to commit suicide and as a Coup De Grace Gopu finds out the actual reason behind the dinner. Sanjay is taught a lesson in life as the bumbling Mr.Gopu, with the help of Sanjay's friend Sameer and a fellow tax inspector Hari puts everything back on track and all ends happily. Or does it
