An Evocation of Vienna circa 1910 February 4, 2007

What a Neighborhood! and the Roerich Museum present a free recital of music for violin, soprano, and piano by the tightly-knit circle of Viennese composers Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, and music of by their friends and neighbors, including works by Alexander Zemlinsky, Alma Mahler, Johann Strauss, Jr., and traditional gypsy music. Brother and sister Ishmael Wallace, pianist, and Vita Wallace, violinist, have performed together as the Orfeo Duo since childhood. Reviewers have praised their “magnificent performances,” saying “this kind of rapport is rare indeed” (Classics Today), and “Their interpretations are daring and fresh. These are performers I would pay good money to hear” (National Post).
A native of San Francisco, Silvie Jensen studied voice and piano at the SF Conservatory before receiving a degree from Columbia University. Extraordinarily versatile, with a luscious voice, she has appeared as a soloist at the Barbican in London with Ornette Coleman, in numerous roles with Friends and Enemies of New Music, as a soloist for orchestral works and oratorios with New York orchestras, in solo recitals including one at Symphony Space, and at Carnegie Hall as a participant in a workshop with Meredith Monk.
What a Neighborhood! celebrates the Morningside Heights and West Harlem area primarily through the music of living local composers. Each year, the series also features music illuminating a community of the past.
