Veteran German filmmaker Werner Herzog will be honored at this year's San
Francisco International Film Festival.
Herzog, director of "Grizzly Man" (2005), "Fitzcarraldo" (1982) and
"Aguirre: The Wrath of God" (1973), will receive the San Francisco Film
Society's Directing Award.
A tribute to Herzog, with an onstage interview, and program of clips, and a
screening of his 2005 feature, "The Wild Blue Yonder," will take place at
7:30 p.m. April 26 at the Castro Theatre.
The festival's Peter J. Owens award, which salutes an actor's career for
"brilliance, independence and integrity," will go this year to Ed Harris.
He'll be honored at the film society's Awards Night, April 27 at the Westin
St. Francis. (Herzog will receive his award at the same event.)
This year, the festival will, for the first time, open with a movie from
Hong Kong, Peter Chan's "Perhaps Love." Featuring an all-star Asian cast
including Jacky Cheung, the film, set in Shanghai and Beijing, is a
large-scale musical about a love triangle. It screens at 7 p.m. April 20 at
the Castro, with the opening-night gala after the film at the Regency
Center. Chan will attend both events.
Closing this 49th festival on May 4 will be Robert Altman's latest, "A
Prairie Home Companion," based on the popular radio show and starring, among
others, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Lily Tomlin, John C. Reilly and Lindsay
Lohan. A closing night party follows at Mezzanine nightclub.
