Americans with Disabilities Act 20th Anniversary Celebration July 26, 2010

America is different, better, freer, and more accessible thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Patrons from across the Commonwealth will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the passing of the bill into law with a public celebration that brings together speakers, comedy and live entertainment all in the heart of the HUB.

The ADA protects the civil rights of people with disabilities in all aspects of life; employment, government, transportation, and guaranteeing access to public buildings such as restaurants, stores, and hotels. The ADA makes it possible for everyone with a disability to live a life of freedom and equality.

The line-up of entertainment includes comedy from Jonathan Katz, more famously known for his animated series, Dr. Katz Professional Therapist. In 1996, Katz was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, he now serves as a spokesperson for people who deal with disabilities due to MS. Audience members will also enjoy live performances from the Tommy Filiault Band and the Matt Savage Trio. Matt Savage, a Massachusetts native and Berkeley College of Music student, is a piano prodigy with autism. At the age of six he taught himself to read music. John Hockenberry, radio host of the ‘Takeaway’ and a noted journalist who uses a wheelchair, will deliver the keynote address.

On Monday, July 26, at 11:15 a.m., the celebration will commence with an awareness march that will leave from the Boston Common at the corner of Tremont St. and Boylston St., and circle to the corner of Charles St. and Beacon St. The speaking program and live performances will be held from noon to 3 p.m.
