Welcome to the 3rd Annual AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Des Moines, Iowa, October 6 – 9, 2010. Des Moines is easy to reach by air, car, or motor coach. It is at the intersection of the number one and three most traveled interstates in the United States: I-80 (coast-to-coast) and I-35 (border to border). The AQS Quilt Show will be held at the Iowa Events Center, 730 Third Street, located just off the Third Street exit on I-235 in downtown Des Moines.
A gigantic Merchant Mall will have all of the latest quiltmaking supplies + new and antique quilts + quilt-related gifts – it’s a dream shopping mall for any quilter.
Quilters will be vying for more than $44,000 in cash awards in the AQS Quilt Contest. More than 1,000 quilts will be on display including the AQS Quilt Contest quilts and the annual show of the 500-member Des Moines Area Quilters Guild quilts using the theme A World of Quilts. A variety of special quilt exhibits will be featured: Game Board Quilts by Arlean Rosemore; Living Colour, Association of Pacific West Quilters; Feedsack Quilts, Midwest Feedsack Club; New Quilts from an Old Favorite: Sunflowers, semifinalists in the annual contest of the National Quilt Museum, Paducah, Kentucky; 2011 Pilgrim/Roy Challenge; and Men and the Art of Quiltmaking, curated by Joe Cunningham.
The Des Moines Area Quilters Guild will also have a raffle quilt, A World of Blossoms, and the Treasured Quilts exhibit will feature quilts from around the world. A special Kid's Korner will share quilts from the guild's summer quilting classes for kids at local libraries and the Iowa State Fair Sew-In for Kids. Children's activities will be provided and a special "I Spy" sheet will have the children looking for things as they view the quilts. A new Touch Quilt Tour on Wednesday will allow those with sight impairments to touch small tactile quilts to experience the beauty of quilts at this year's show.
