American Cancer Society's Relay for Life provides a unique opportunity to honor cancer survivors, increase awareness about the issue of cancer and raise funds to continue the fight against cancer. The 2007 Chinatown Relay for Life planning committee is a diverse group of community-minded individuals ranging from young working professionals to college students. Bound by common interests, we are dedicated volunteers for the American Cancer Society—our main goal and purpose in organizing a Relay for Life in Chinatown is to bring this community together and to educate them about cancer, share our personal stories and to honor all those who have been affected by this disease.
During this daylong event, teams of people gather to take turns walking or running laps in an effort to raise awareness and money to fight cancer. We will also feature cultural performances, a health fair, and a variety of entertainment for all ages. The power of Relay for Life comes from experiencing and sharing the triumph and hope with our guests of honor—the cancer survivors— who will take a victory lap around the track to signify the beginning of the Relay event, and at sunset, the lighting of the Luminaria candles to remember and honor people whose lives have been touched by cancer.
We hope that you will join us in making the first Chinatown Relay for Life a great success this year! For more information, please contact us at relayforlife.chinatown@gmail.com or 718-886-8890.
