Jazz Heritage Center presents
The West Coast premiere of
Jam Session: America’s Jazz Ambassadors Embrace the World!
In efforts to promote Jazz awareness the Jazz Heritage Center is showcasing the Jam Session exhibition. The Jazz Heritage Center is a complex located in the Fillmore district of San Francisco that aims to increase Jazz popularity by introducing the culture everyone. The location of the JHC, the Fillmore, is key to this idea because it is so rich in Jazz history. It used to be a working class neighborhood that acted as a refugee for artists and musicians to gather, such as John Lee Hooker and Oscar Pederson. It was the happening social and musical scene and is hoping to rebirth itself as the new center for Jazz. The JHC is assisting the Fillmore in its come back to reemerge into the Jazz nexus.
Jazz is a genre of music loved by many because of its diversity. Jazz has many different styles and ranges. There is the Beep Bop of the 40s with the soft and mellow tones for the coolies played by both Duke Ellington and Oscar Pederson. Or the Bohemian style of the 50s and 60s patronized by listeners from France to New York. The JHC would love for you to expand your Jazz horizons and the next opportunity for those interested in learning more is the JHC’s hosting of the Jam Session: America’s Jazz Ambassadors Embrace the World.
The Jam Session exhibit will present the role of Jazz in American history through photography and documentaries. It is a chance to meet and greet members of the San Francisco scene, such as Mayor Gavin Newsome, Willie ? Brown, and Peter Fitzsimmons. Come to the gallery to see artwork and photography featuring the numerous greats of Jazz. You can even purchase some of the paintings for your personal collection! View screenings about the history and legends of Jazz, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillepsie, and Count Bassie. Come hear personal accounts of people’s stories about their experience with Jazz and growing up in the Jazz scene. This is also your opportunity to hear Gavin Newsome speak first hand. The event will be held on May 17th at 3pm. So come on over to the JHC to enjoy drink and refreshments in the San Francisco Fillmore district. This is the happening place for the contemporary and past Jazz scene. This event is free so bring all of your friends to celebrate Jazz.
