How much do our individual racial, religious, sexual or national identities define us? What unites us? What does it mean to be ?cosmopolitan? and a citizen of the world? Are new identities on the horizon? Henry Louis Gates Jr., the W.E.B. Dubois Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University, moderates this discussion on a crucial issue of our time.
Panelists include Kwame Anthony Appiah, a professor of philosophy at Princeton University and the author of Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers, In My Father?s House and The Ethics of Identity; Amy Guttman, president of the University of Pennsylvania and author of Identity in Democracy and many other books on political philosophy and practical ethics; and Amartya Sen, a professor at Harvard who won the 1998 Nobel Prize in economics. Sen is the author of Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny.
Gates, Appiah, and Amartya Sen, oh my! A cultural historian / critical theorist / MCMer's delight.
