Curated by artist Catherine McInnis, this tour will begin on Mission Street near the old entrance to Woodward's Gardens, a zoo/amusement park/museum/botanical garden. From 1866-1891 this Garden was located on two city blocks bordering Mission and Valencia Streets and 13th/Duboce and 15th Streets. As participants walk around the perimeter and through the (now imaginary) pedestrian tunnel on 14th Street, they will hear the sounds of the Gardens, from horse-drawn streetcars on wooden Mission Street, to exotic zoo animals, boats on a fake lake, rides, and special attractions. Woodward's Gardens was home to one of the first Edison phonographs. Woodward himself brought in traveling acrobats and even an "Indian tribe" to live in a recreated village. Toward the end of the tour, participants will hear turn-of-the century sounds and those of the park deteriorating.
