Alive by Her Own Hand: Women Composers As Performers of Their Work, a “fest-conference” presented by the Brandeis University Women’s Studies Research Center on January 22-23, will create the widest possible window into the story of female musicians composing and delivering their own creations to the public. Two bold concert programs, Living Artists & Current Movements on January 22, and Ave Regina: Women’s Musical Creations in Convent and Accademia, on January 23, make up the evocative bookends for this weekend of events. Lecture/recitals and papers will be presented on the afternoons of both days, with topics to include Dame Ethel Smyth, Pauline Viardot, Mary Lou Williams, Louise Talma, Maria Antonia Walpurgis, and Augusta Browne. Specialists are traveling from California, Florida, the Capitol area, New York, Philadelphia, and Iowa to weave their lively histories and insights into the weekend’s varied texture and to raise public appreciation for this extraordinary thread in women’s musical narrative.
The fest-conference concerts will take place in Slosberg Music Center while other activities will be held at the Women’s Studies Research Center in the Epstein Building, both on the Brandeis campus.
