Often compared to Robert Altman’s work, Alila follows the intersecting lives of the residents of a run-down apartment building in Tel Aviv—from a couple having an affair, to a husband who relentlessly pursues his divorced wife, to their son who refuses to serve in the army, to their neighbor the corrupt policewoman. Created in forty single-shot scenes, this film creates a sense of continuity between these interlocking character studies and presents a colorful portrait of contemporary Israel. (2003, 122 min. No MPAA rating. In Hebrew with English subtitles.)
