A native of Washington D.C., Alex Hoffman began playing the saxophone at age 9 but first became passionate about jazz at age 12 under the tutelage of his teacher Paul Carr. Mr. Carr encouraged Alex to pursue the saxophone seriously and preached diligent practice and thorough listening. Alex then began to audition for a number of all-star jazz ensembles while in high school. He was a member of the grammy High School Jazz ensembles twice, a participant in the Vail Jazz Workshop, and thrice a semi-finalist in the Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship Competition. After high school, Alex moved to New York to further pursue his musical endeavors. He began studying with luminaries such as Ralph Lalama, Barry Harris, Brian Lynch, Charles Davis, and Chris Byars, and quickly gained a reputation on the New York jazz scene as a serious student of jazz with an authentic and refreshing sound. Since moving to New York, Alex has performed with artists and bands such as Brian Lynch, the Chris Byars Octet, Ari Roland, Sacha Perry, the Stan Rubin Orchestra, the Lapis Luna Orchestra, and Fukushi Tanaka, at venues such as Lincoln Center, the Blue Note, and Smalls Jazz Club. He has also led his own quartet at venues in Washington D.C. and New York, featuring Sacha Perry, Ari Roland and Keith Balla.
