Epic dance theater, Vertical Road is Khan's enthralling meditation on man's journey to grace.
Akram Khan is one of the most acclaimed choreographers working in Britain today. His dancers come from diverse cultures, traditions and dance backgrounds – Chinese, Korean, Indian, South-African and Spanish – and this rich mix of both spoken and dance language pushes and erases boundaries, both geographic and cultural. His most recent ensemble work, Vertical Road, draws inspiration from the Sufi tradition and the Persian poet and philosopher Rumi.
Danny Boyle, the Artistic Director of the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, invited Khan (who also danced) to choreograph a prominent section of the Ceremony’s Isles of Wonder piece after watching a performance of Vertical Road – which explores similar themes.
