Join the Michigan Commission on the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 at the Detroit Historical Museum for a symposium, "After Tippecanoe," describing the war's key battles and events in the Old Northwest.
"The Battle of Tippecanoe, a critical event leading to the outbreak of the War of 1812, took place on November 7, 1811, nearly two hundred years ago," said Phil Porter, commission chairman and director of Mackinac State Historic Parks, which administers Fort Mackinac, the site of the first land battle of the War of 1812 in United States Territory. "This symposium will interest anyone wishing to learn more about key War of 1812 events in Michigan and surrounding areas."
A diverse group of historians will present a wide array of topics, including "Origins of the War of 1812" by Hal Youmans, editor of the War of 1812 Journal; "Mackinac in the War of 1812" by Porter; "Capitulation: In Defense of William Hull" by Anthony Yanik, author of Maxwell Motors and the Making of the Chrysler Corporation; "Henry Procter and the Western Theatre" by Sandy Antal, author of A Wampum Denied: Procter's War of 1812; "A Native American Perspective" by Meredith Henry, Director, Gijigowi Bipskaabiimi Department, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians; "River Raisin: Invaded on All Sides" by Commission Vice-chairman Ralph Naveaux, emeritus director of the Monroe County Historical Museum; "African Americans in the War of 1812" by Gene Smith, professor of history at Texas Christian University and curator of history at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History; "Turning Point: The Battle of Lake Erie" by Arthur M. Woodford author of This is Detroit, 1701-2001; and "William Henry Harrison and the Campaign of 1813" by David Skaggs, retired history professor at Bowling Green State University and War of 1812 author.
Co-sponsored by the Detroit Historical Society and the Michigan Council for History Education, the symposium includes a full program and resource materials, along with a continental breakfast and lunch. Registration is $95.
