Discussion with Filmmaker Kathleen Foster
Afghan Women: A History of Struggle captures the resilience and courage of women who risk their lives on a daily basis to stand up for their rights. The film examines the drafting of the Afghan Women's Bill of Rights by women from across Afghanistan at a 2003 conference in Kandahar. The women look at the pivotal role women's struggle for equality has played in the country's tumultuous political history and debunk the myth that current U.S. intervention in Afghanistan has liberated Afghan women from the tyranny of fundamentalism. The film exposes the “War on Terror” as mainly a euphemism for expanding U.S. control of the region's oil and gas.
