Advanced Optimizer Seminar with Joze Senegacnik June 8, 2009

This seminar is prepared for developers and DBAs in order to help them to understand how the Cost Based Optimizer works. The goal of the seminar is to reveal the deepen the knowledge about mechanisms in cost based optimization, about the initialization parameters that influence the CBO’s work, SQL statement transformation, execution plan preparation, optimization and plan stability.

The statistics and histogram gathering and their influence on the cost based optimization are studied in details. The attendees will learn also about the automatic tuning process, how SQL profiles can be used to overcome flaws in CBO and how important are properly sized working areas for optimal SQL statement execution. In the last part of the seminar we discuss the extensible optimizer, the parallel execution and partition pruning and we conclude with a lesson how to interpret the CBO trace file.
