SFOF: ADEM + The Memory Band + Aidan Smith
Hymn-like song structures and an honest vocal delivery present Adem’s tightly-wrought musical vision with style. Beautiful, plaintative and meditative, strings soar, chimes ring out and Adem’s voice strokes gently over the top. Distinctly Celtic flavour with baroque pop elements: like Will Oldham conducting a playground orchestra. With a freeform approach to song structures live, he really lets it go. Rarefied, after-hours urban folk genius, Adem is undoubtedly one of the best British songwriters around. In any genre.

The Memory Band was conceived as an imaginary band, built inside a computer and made real by the contributions of numerous musicians. Live, it is an acoustic band of ever changing numbers who are at the forefront of a new approach to traditional music. Featuring violins, harmoniums, guitars and whatever else is available The Memory Band perform pieces written by Stephen Cracknell, aka Leaf Labler Gorodisch, who also produced the Memory Bands eponymous LP. Championing a fresh approach to eclectic folktronica.

Just 23 years of age and hailing from Eccles, Aidan Smith has the ability to blend jauntiness and tragedy like the best of North Country entertainers. Managing to soak up most of the best music of the 20th century, Aidan’s sound is a curious mesh of pre-war Lancastrian nostalgia and modern day twisted folk. A touchingly tender voice combines with a folksy finger picking style to produce something genuinely moving with a real sense of heart, humour and melody.
