ACT A LADY
Written by Jordan Harrison
Directed by Andrew McMillan
A sumptuously comic tale about the woman in every man, the man in every woman, and the power of theatre to uncover both.
It’s 1927 and the men of a small prohibition-era town in Midwest America have decided to put on a performance for charity. The play? A lavish 17th Century melodrama played out against the backdrop of the French revolution. When all the men are required to dress as women, the whole community is affected; gender lines blur, eyebrows raise, identities explode, and life and art are forever entangled.
ACT A LADY is a thoughtful and exuberant fable about the woman in every man, the man in every woman and the power of theatre to uncover both. Warning: Accompanied by accordion.
"In ACT A LADY the transforming power of the creative imagination is both a source of camp pleasures and a fount of social commentary.” - American Theatre
"Part Waiting for Guffman and part Dangerous Liaisons, ACT A LADY’S dizzying gender-bending explores the theatre, the fallibility of stereotypes and the joys of accordion music with a deft wisdom..." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
