Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau, the son of the Native American Sacajawea and a white trapper, Toussaint Charbonneau, is best remembered today as the infant carried on Sacagawea’s back during the Lewis and Clarke expedition. Thad Carhart’s historical novel follows Jean-Baptiste from his childhood among the Mandan Tribe of his mother, to his sojourn to Paris in the 1820’s as a young man and close friend of Duke Paul of Wurttenberg. Carhart’s compelling novel is a fascinating examination of identity, friendship, and the history of the American frontier and the European Court.
