Abstract:
The Indiana University School of Informatics is one of the broadest and largest schools of computing and information technology in the United States. It has over 100 faculty and nearly 2000 students and spans the full range of computing and information technology. This includes foundational areas of computer science such as programming languages, networks and systems, databases and theory; a broad range of applications such as high performance computing and cyberinfrastructure, bioinformatics, health informatics, music informatics, security, and complex networks and systems; and human and social issues including human computer interaction design and social informatics. This talk will give a brief overview of the IU School of Informatics, followed by an indication of some of the research that is conducted in the school. It will conclude by reflecting more broadly on the crucially important and stimulating challenges that lie before us in the areas of computing and information technology.
About the speaker:
Dr. Bobby Schnabel is Dean of the School of Informatics at Indiana University. He leads a multi-campus school of approximately 100 faculty members at the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, including undergraduate and graduate programs in computer science and informatics at Bloomington and in informatics Purdue University at Indiana University Indianapolis. He is a Professor of informatics and computing at IU Bloomington. From August 2009 – July 2010, he served concurrently as interim Vice President for Research for Indiana University.
He served for six years as chair of the Information Technology Deans group of CRA and for nine years on the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association. He is a co-founder and executive team member of the National Center for Women & Information Technology, and at Colorado was a PI on the Alliance for the Advancement of African-American Researchers in Computing funded by NSF as part of the Broadening Participation in Computing program.
