Finkielkraut will retrace the genealogy of the new manifestations of anti-Semitism in France and Europe today, through a close examination of Christian theology (especially Paul and Pascal). He will also explore the discourse of universalism and humanism in France since the Revolution, and its at times conflicting engagement with Jewish particularism. He will discuss the adaptability of anti-Semitism throughout history and highlight the recycling of anti-Judaic tropes in the current debate in France with respect to the Middle East conflict. Co-sponsored in cooperation with Indiana University Department of Judaic Studies and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies. Alain Finkielkraut studied philosophy at the Ecole normale supe rieure de Saint-Cloud, France.
Sponsored by the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, the Center for Jewish Studies, the Department of French and the Institute for Advanced Study.
