Acclaimed Joffrey Ballet apprentices to perform at American Dance Institute March 3, 2007

In its quest to bring world-class cultural offerings to Montgomery County, American Dance Institute will showcase one of the world's finest classical ballet companies, the Joffrey Ballet’s Arpino Apprentices. The performances will offer children and aspiring young dancers an extraordinary opportunity to learn more about the journey of becoming a professional dancer. During the program, Joffrey Balletmaster Mark Goldweber will speak to the audience about the dances and the career stages of a ballet dancer.

The Arpino Apprentices will perform a variety of acclaimed Joffrey Ballet repertoires in American Dance Institute’s intimate 140-seat studio, including A La Gershwin, Confetti, Tagolioni Pas de Deux from Pas de Deeses, and a solo from Lacrymosa. "Our stage area is designed to give the feeling of a private performance, where the audience can see and appreciate the true artistry and grace of these excellent young dancers," said Michael Bjerknes, executive director of American Dance Institute and a former Joffrey Ballet principal dancer. "Seeing the Arpino Apprentices is an exceptional chance for young dancers to understand the training, discipline and commitment involved in pursing a professional dance career." Tickets for the performances are priced at $20 for adults and $10 for students, seniors, children and those with a DC dance pass.

In addition to the performances, Joffrey Balletmaster Mark Goldweber will conduct a master class, open to DC area pre-professional high school students and college students trained at an intermediate/advanced level, on Sunday, March 4th at 11:00 a.m. The cost for this class is $20 per student.

One of the most renowned dance companies, the Joffrey Ballet is internationally recognized for its collection of historical ballets and innovative works. Founded in 1956 in the heart of New York, Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino sought to realize their uniquely American vision of dance. Together, Joffrey and Arpino created a company of dynamic dancers, choreographing original and socially relevant ballets and embracing modern dance.

There will be a second performance on Sunday, March 4th at 1:30 p.m.
