Director - Dr. Alice Jonas is the Director of the Academic Mastery Center and organizes the camp every year.

About Academic Mastery Center

This program began July 2000 under the direction of Dr. Alice Jonas with a staff of professional volunteer teachers from various school districts in Texas. The instruction is designed to prepare students for success in meeting promotion requirements of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Test, TEA Standards.

Academic Mastery Center is scheduled for July 10-18, 2009. Key staff members are experienced professionals in the Texas Independent School Districts of Houston, Friendswood, Galveston, Brazoria, Dickenson and others.

Core classes are Reading, Creative Writing, and Math. Elective classes are Computer Literacy, Drama, Arts & Crafts, and Music. The best statistics available were for July 2005 in which 70 students were pre-tested and 68 post-tested, 73.5% showed improvement in this 9-day learning experience. This program offers much more than educational support for at-risk students, it is a structured mentoring program where youth can be trained to carry responsibility and eventually step into leadership positions in community service.

All Volunteers enlisted are expected to model integrity in their performance, cooperate with the entire staff and serve with respect for others. This is an intense, highly structured program.

~The Reading Department is headed by Kathy Osborn.
~The Creative Writing Department is headed by Mrs. Benjamin from the Virgin Islands.
~Bro. Hollis was this years Computer Technology teacher.
~Lisa Carter has been the Drama Teacher for several years now.
~Cathy Cottrel was this year's Arts and Crafts teacher.
~Personal Tutoring is available for all children and there are teacher assistants in every major class.
~Diagnostic Testing is done at the beginning and at the end AMC in order to gauge the students academic maturity during the week.
~Jerry Barto is the currently the Boys Dean
~The Girl's Dean is Esther Osborn
