The Abaca String Band will lead off the 43rd season of the Bakersfield Community Concert Association. An unusual emsemble - ourrageous, irreverent, refreshing with its unique instrumentation. The Abaca String Band is known for its unique blend of instruments, including an eight-string guitar, mandolin, violin, viola and double bass. The group, formed in 1991, plays a wide range of music, from Bach to "Pinball Wizard." It has performed at the White House, Library of Congress, Lincoln Center, the Newport Music Festival and New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Founder and music director Andrew Schulman plays the eight- string guitar. Other band members are Tamara Volskaya (mandolin), Robert Zubrycki (violin), Julie Goodale (viola) and Marc Schmeid (double bass).
