THE BAKERSFIELD COMMUNITY THEATRE PLAYHOUSE WELCOMES YOU TO JOIN US IN A CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND THE STORY OF AMERICA AS WE PROUDLY PRESENT “A WOMAN CALLED TRUTH.” HONORED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS, “A WOMAN CALLED TRUTH” CHRONICLES THE LIFE OF SOJOURNER TRUTH FROM THE DAY SHE WAS SOLD AWAY FROM HER FAMILY AS A CHILD, THROUGH HER FIGHT TO GAIN HER FREEDOM AND THE FREEDOM OF HER CHILDREN, TO HER EMERGENCE AS A RESPECTED ACTIVIST FOR ABOLITION AND WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE. TRUTH’S ACTUAL WORDS, INCLUDING HER HISTORIC “AIN’T I A WOMAN?” SPEECH, WOVEN TOGETHER WITH AUTHENTIC SLAVE SONGS, SPIRITUALS, AND FOLK SONGS OF THE PERIOD TELL THE STORY OF A WOMAN, A PEOPLE, AND A COUNTRY.
