On a stormy day in the summer 1700, the British merchant ship Henrietta Marie was driven into a shoal off the Florida Keys and sank, taking her cargo and crew with her. Over 250 years later, an archaeologist exploring her scattered wreckage uncovered a set of shackles. Then another. And another. Soon her secret came to light: the Henrietta Marie was a slave ship! Today, the Henrietta Marie is the only excavated slaver in the Americas. Explore these emotional reminders of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, and the stories of pride, courage, strength, and survival they speak to. Over 90 original artifacts are part of this exhibit at the Frazier.
