An Open Invitation – Prayer Vigil:

In today’s society our children, teachers, volunteers and leaders are faced with many difficult decisions. As we all know the controversy over prayer in schools, I am a firm believer in prayer and the power there of.

As a concerned parent and the Seventh District President of PTA, I would like to invite you to attend a volunteer prayer vigil to pray for our children, teachers, bus drivers, volunteers and leaders in our school systems. We will also pray for the congressional bills that are at hand that influence the well-being of our children and our schools.

This Prayer vigil will not be hosted by a particular Denomination, Faith, or Belief. We will be united together in prayer for one cause, Our Children and Their Future!

God Bless,

Tina Decker

Prayer vigil, gospel music kicks off school year

By KELLY RICHARDSON
ELIZABETHTOWN — A public prayer meeting designed to invoke blessings for the coming school year attracted a youth group pushing to restore prayer in schools and Hardin County’s singing superintendent.

About 50 people from local schools and churches gathered Tuesday at Pritchard Community Center to pray for the upcoming school year and congressional legislation that will affect schools and students.

Nannette Johnston, Hardin County Schools’ new superintendent, helped open the back-to-school prayer vigil as she performing a few songs as part of the gospel group Testify.

The Grand Rivers Baptist Church youth group traveled about two and a half hours from the Land Between the Lakes area to attend. They work with the Revive project, whose purpose is to return prayer to public schools. They pray in school buildings one Sunday a month and welcome Christians of all denominations to join.

The youth group showed a video of what Revive does and how it is attempting to restore prayer to schools.

“There’s a battle going on in our schools,” said Wade White, who works with Revive.

While attendees formed a prayer circle, Revive Youth Coordinator Brandy Nelson led the gathering in prayer. Some prayed silently and some were moved to tears.

White said Revive started in January and it has spread across Kentucky and into other states.

“We just started praying that God would open doors for us and He has,” White said.

After everyone prayed together, the group divided to pray individually and in smaller groups.

Tina Decker, president of the Seventh District Parent/Teachers’ Association, began organizing the vigil about two months ago.

“It’s just something I feel like God put on my heart,” she said.

More than 100 area churches were invited, as were Elizabethtown and Hardin County school districts and private schools. Some people initially were hesitant about the idea, she said, because it brought together public schools and religion, but most like the idea.

Decker said seeing different denominations come together out of concern for school children was rewarding.

“That’s just an awesome event,” she said.

The Rev. William L. Curle of Freedoms Way Church in Cecilia attended and said the county and the country need prayer.

“We’re at a crisis and a crossroads,” he said.
