A Man of No Importance
Book by Terrence McNally
Music by Stephen Flaherty, Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens
Directed by Susan D. Atkinson
Based on the 1994 film of the same name, A Man of No Importance takes audiences to the city of Dublin in the 1960s. Alfie Byrne is eager to produce Oscar Wilde’s controversial play Salome with his St. Imelda’s Players, despite strong public objections at his church. As he fights to produce the play, Alfie must come to grips with his own secrets and understand his significance in the world. With a stunning and passionate score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Once On This Island, My Favorite Year, Seussical, Dessa Rose) and libretto by the venerated Terrence McNally (Frankie and Johnny at the Claire De Lune, The Ritz, Ragtime) A Man of No Importance was the winner of the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical.
