Young Sara Crewe and her father, Captain Crewe, are wealthy. Captain Crewe enrolls Sara into Miss Minchin's private boarding school for girls to learn to be a proper young lady. Despite being pampered all her life in India, Sara herself is very intelligent, polite and creative. She is popular with most of the school's students whom begin regarding her as a princess, which she embraces. Sara befriends some of the schools outcasts including the scullery maid. Then word comes that Saras father has passed away and lost his fortune, leaving Sara penniless. Will she become a beggar? Will Miss Minchin throw her out into the street or keep her under her roof? Is Sara really broke or has something been left for her to inherit?
