The earth's climate is changing, this we know. Is the change the result of natural climate cycles or is it man made, or combination of both? The most talked about theory is that the earth's climate is changing for the worse and that humankind is largely, if not wholly, responsible for the worsening conditions. If climate change is man-made, then we have a moral responsibility to change drastically the way we live so that we do not cause damage to the environment. The moral imperative holds even if the costs of change far outweigh any benefits that might accrue.

Arguably, the science behind the theory of man-made global climate change is controversial.

Those who question the veracity of the scientific evidence put forth by man-made global climate change advocates assert that it is politics, not science, that is the driving force behind the call for wholesale changes in our lifestyles.

Join us at the Hickory Metro Convention Center on Wednesday evening, February 11, as two of the nation's most respected climate scientists discuss the science of global climate change.

Dr. William H. Schlesinger is the President of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Before coming to the Institute, he served in a dual capacity at Duke University, as both the James B. Duke Professor of Biogeochmistry and Dean of the Nicolas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences.

Dr. John R. Christy is Professor of Atmospheric Science and Director of the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville where began studying global climate issues in 1987.
