The celebration begins at 7 p.m. on the 19th at Miller Outdoor Theatre, where we will commemorate the events that took place on June 19, 1865 when Texas slaves learned of their freedom. A Gulf Coast Juneteenth celebrates the rich African American musical traditions of Texas and the Gulf Coast, featuring The Meters Experience with Leo Nocentelli, Soul Rebels Brass Band and Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas. On Sunday at 7 p.m. a Juneteenth Gospel Celebration showcases the African American gospel traditions of Houston and the Gulf Coast region with performances by Endurance, The Good News Gospel Choir and The Kingdom Aires.
