A Farewell to Arms (Frank Borzage, 1932, 78 minutes)
This is the original film of Ernest Hemingway’s novel (Rock Hudson leads the 1957 re-make), directed by Frank Borzage (“Seventh Heaven,” “Lucky Star”), one of the great romantic filmmakers of the 1920s and ‘30s. The film is beautifully shot, and like most films about World War I, it offers a vision of war as an affront to all existence. Borzage understands Hemingway’s great economy as a writer, but still manages to make a lush, affecting film. The picture stars Helen Hayes, Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou.
