"A Drop of Humanity in a Sea of Whales", a public talk with Q+A April 16, 2011

Dr. Toni Frohoff is Director and co-founder of TerraMar Research. She is a behavioral and wildlife biologist who has been studying marine mammal behavior and communication for over 20 years.

Toni Frohoff, Ph.D, specializes in behavior, stress and welfare in captive and free-ranging dolphins in response to human activity. Most recently, she has initiated the first intensive study of the behavioral ecology of dolphins in the Santa Barbara region of California. This study is an important component of the newly formed Protect Our Dolphins (POD) an educational, scientific, and community based organization.

We are living in times in which our concept of humanity may need to be expanded. While human intelligence manifests as burgeoning global industrialization, the qualities of humanity that are considered the most precious - and unique - are seen by many to be diminishing. Environmental events have exposed the hubris of human technology, and for the first time in the history of this planet, one species threatens the survival of all. Yet, if we expand our worldview to encompass surprising aspects of the wisdom in other animals - such as dolphins, whales, and elephants - we may find aspects of humanity in other species that inspire and perhaps even guide us to more expansive aspects of our own.
