A major figure in children's literature since the 1960s, Maurice Sendak was called "the greatest creator of picture books in the hundred-odd years' history of the form" by critic John Rowe Townsend. In addition to books such as the Caldecott-winner WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE and IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN, Mr. Sendak has produced operas and ballets for television and stage, including BRUNDIBAR, his 2006 collaboration with playwright Tony Kushner. Mr. Kushner, the author of ANGELS IN AMERICA and HOMEBODY/KABUL, leads this 80th birthday celebration. he is joined by composer Oliver Knussen and other Sendak friends and collaborators.
