"Patriotism"
Patriotism is the theme of the 85th Arvada Harvest Festival Parade being held Saturday, September 11 in Olde Town Arvada. Pre-parade entertainment begins at 8:30 a.m. and the parade from 9 a.m. until noon. This year members of the military, police, fire departments and emergency medical technicians make up the parades’ Grand Marshalls and Arvada school children will be handing out 5000 thank you notes to those who keep us safe.
The Arvada Harvest Festival Parade is the second largest, and most intimate, parade in the state of Colorado.
With approximately 5000 participants there will be 30 emcees working 15 announcing stations along the parade route to maximize the entertainment value for an audience of 25,000 and the exposure of the parade entrants. It is also the only parade championship in the state and attracts the best professionals in their field to judge the competing 20 to 30 High School marching bands. Additionally this is a sanctioned competition for consideration of a marching band's entry to the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. The winner of the 2009 Arvada Harvest Parade competition was Broomfield’s Legacy High School band who will now represent Colorado in the 2010 Macy’s parade in New York City.
Festival activities span three days beginning Friday, September 10 from 5 - 10 p.m. On Saturday, September 11 festivities continue after the parade from noon until midnight and conclude on Sunday, September 12 from Noon to 5 p.m. Festival activities include a Kid's Zone with arts, crafts and plenty of family entertainment and a Kid's Parade for those 12 and under along with Food and Harvest Contests (with prizes), live music, midway rides, more than 100 vendor booths plus a Beer and Margarita Garden for the adults.
Parade Chairman Ed Tomlinson says, "Parades are big fun for millions of people. There are about 50,000 parades a year in the U.S. In Colorado, there are holiday parades and rodeo parades, but when it comes to community parades, by any standard you want to use, the Arvada Harvest Festival Parade has proven to be the best community parade."
