Electric Works is pleased to announce “73 Funshine”, a solo show by Bay Area resident Jason Jägel. The reception on Friday, September 12 from 6- 8 PM at 130 8th Street in San Francisco is free and open to the public. The exhibition will also serve as the book release for Jägel's forthcoming monograph also titled, "73 Funshine," published by Electric Works. Weighing in at over 200 color pages, this book concentrates on the artist’s endeavors since 2001, the year that music took hold as a driving force of Jägel’s narrative gouache paintings. “73 Funshine,” is proud to be accompanied by a 10” vinyl record with 3 jazz songs by Madlib. Essayists and contributors include Madlib; Jeff Jank of Stones Throw Records; Joseph del Pesco, independent curator; and Nate Denver, writer and musician.
The exhibition presents selections from various bodies of work, dating as far back as 1997, and features paintings made specifically for “73 Funshine.” These endeavors include fictional and actual album cover paintings, records made of paper, narrative vinyl “grooves” made of pencil and paintings inspired by the content of specific songs, albums and artists. Jägel's father was also an painter: one who created album covers for Ornette Colman, John Coltrane and more, just as Jason has in turn, created covers for Madlib, MF DOOM and so on. This love of music and an exploration of visual interaction with music anchors this show's themes and ideas.
