The origin for the event began for Jacqueline 10 years ago following a personal trip to Brazil. Throughout Rio and Bahia, January 1st is celebrated by honoring the spirit of the ocean. "When I returned to the US, I continued this tradition at first on my own. After a couple of years, I invited friends and other local community members. Dressed in all white clothing, we walked with intention to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve to show honor and reverence for the gifts of the sea while singing and drumming in procession towards the ocean. Upon arrival, we danced with gratitude for our blessings and our prayers. I added a personal ritual to the honoring of New Year's Day by acknowledging our challenges from the previous year and bringing forth our gifts of learning into the New Year. We also affirmed the release of what no longer serves us and affirmed our plan to bring forth our knowledge, gifts and personal goals into the New Year. The purpose is to come together in celebration while honoring the life giving nature of the ocean as we acknowledge our hopes and dreams for ourselves, one another and our global community."
