The 34th Annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, "The World United Through Dance," takes place June 2-July 1. Festival Artistic Directors Carlos Carvajal and CK Ladzekpo have curated a thrilling line-up featuring 30 veteran Bay Area dance companies performing both ancient and contemporary dances, including ground breaking cross-cultural collaborations and encore performances of some favorite dance pieces from past seasons.
The events of the second weekend of the Festival take place at two prominent San Francisco museums. The de Young Museum hosts an Artist Dialogue with dance maverick Carolena Nericcio on Saturday, June 9, at 2 p.m. The founder of a dance style called American Tribal Belly Dance, her works share her vision of women dancing together as one entity. The dialogue with Carolena will be followed by a performance with members of her dance company, FatChanceBellyDance. The next day, on Sunday, June 10 at 2 p.m., the Asian Art Museum hosts a special Festival performance in conjunction with a site-specific Sun K. Kwak artwork meditating on the spiritual and cosmological themes of the museum's "Phantoms of Asia" exhibit.
