Four Rockabilly Bands Headed for a Final Showdown
Finalists from the past four weeks of competition for the 2nd Annual West Coast Rockabilly Showdown at the Orange County Market Place in Costa Mesa will compete in the finals on Saturday, June 18 for $2,500 in cash awards and the opportunity to perform at the Hootenanny 2011 on July 2 at Oak Canyon Ranch, Irvine.
The Showdown, which pits unsigned rockabilly bands, kicked off on Saturday, May 14 at the Market Place, the weekend swap meet at the O.C. Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. Finalists were selected during Showdown concerts held over the course of four different Saturdays. A total of 12 bands were chosen via electronic audition submittals to compete. First place winners from each round now battle it out in the finals.
The Jackpot Club, an Orange County based band, performs at noon. Three Los Angeles based bands follow with Ryan Bradley Affair at 1 p.m.; Karling Abbeygate and the Kats at 2 p.m. and The SideWynders at 3 p.m.
They will be vying for the first place cash award of $1,000 and a spot at the Hootenanny on July 2 alongside top name bands such as Dropkick Murphys, Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys and Reverend Horton Heat to name a few. The second place finisher wins $750; third place wins $500 and third place $250.
The Showdown concerts and swap meet admission is FREE with the donation of a canned food item for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. Regular admission is $2 and children 12 and under are always free.
In its 42nd year, the swap meet operates every Saturday and Sunday except during the annual Orange County Fair. Hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features nearly 1,000 vendors, food concessions, fresh produce, artisans and crafters, manufactured homes, kid’s playground and much more.
