The United Methodist Men of Downs Memorial UMC present "The Second Annual Jazz Vespers," a Celebration in Song and Narrative, written by and featuring William (Bill) Bell, Composer and Pianist, and featuring the Jazz Connection Quintet: Dezon Clayborn, Drums; Charlie McCarthy, Sax; James Tinsley, Trumpet; Eric Vogler, Bass; and Vocalists Doug Arrington and Heidi Hill.
William (Bill) Bell is a retired Professor of Music from the College of Alameda and UC Berkeley. He is a teacher, performer, arranger and composer. In 2005 he was a winner of the "Beacon Award" for his contributions to jazz education and performance. He is the founder and artistic director of the Oakland Bay Area Community Chorus. His proudest experience was preparing the choir for one of Maestro Duke Ellington's Sacred Concerts. Bill brings a distinguished array of talented musicians and two superb vocalists with him to this very special afternoon. Joe C. McKenzie, vice chair of the United Methodist Men, will narrate portions of the program
Vespers, as a form of worship, goes back to the Old Testament and is still practiced in some Catholic and Protestant Churches. Downs joined the many churches that have long provided a home for Jazz Vespers, with its initial, very exciting and successful presentation last year.
Although Jazz is thought of as secular music, throughout history it has contained a sacred foundation, giving voice to the hopes, dreams, frustrations and pain that characterize the human condition. Numerous jazz composers have secured a place for this art form within the church, including Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and Wynton Marsalis.
