How do leading contemporary architects create ground-breaking, innovative and exciting projects within a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Greenwich is currently experiencing an architectural renaissance with the addition of iconic new landmarks juxtaposing effectively with celebrated classical buildings – from London’s new and unique planetarium at the Royal Observatory to the Cutty Sark Conservation Project. The architectural practices behind these projects, Allies and Morrison and Youmeheshe with Grimshaw, discuss their architectural concepts and vision with David Ball Restoration Limited, the leading specialists in conserving, repairing and maintaining historic buildings.

The new, futuristic planetarium at the Royal Observatory showcases cutting-edge scientific architecture. A bronze-clad, cone-shaped structure, it is located on the Greenwich Meridian (Longitude 0°), the tilt of one side aligns with the Pole Star and its north-facing glass top is parallel with the plane of the Equator.

The Cutty Sark is the last tea clipper in the world. The current conservation project is designed to preserve the fabric of the ship for future generations and raise the standard of historic ship conservation and presentation. The 19th century ship will be lifted and suspended three metres above her current position, creating an exciting glass-roofed gallery space beneath.

David Ball Restoration Limited (DBR) is the main contractor at the Old Royal Naval College for the continuing restoration programme of Christopher Wren’s original Baroque architecture. Other clients include English Heritage and the Historic Royal Palaces. Their care and repair of Nelson on his column in Trafalgar Square in 2006 received high-profile coverage.
