David Weinberger, an authority on the Internet and society, will give the 2013 Peple Lecture Feb. 17, 2 p.m., at the University of Richmond’s Jepson Alumni Center. He talk will focus on his latest book, “Too Big to Know: Rethinking Knowledge Now That Facts Aren’t Facts, Experts are Everywhere, and the Smartest Person in the Room is the Room.”
The talk, sponsored by Friends of Boatwright Memorial Library, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
Weinberger is a senior researcher at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society and co-director of the Harvard Library Innovation Lab. A philosopher with a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, Weinberger has been a college professor, a gag writer for the comic strip “Inside Woody Allen,” and Internet and technology advisor to the Howard Dean and John Edwards presidential campaigns.
He is author of several books, including “Cluetrain Manifesto,” often described as a primer on Internet marketing. In “Too Big to Know,” Weinbergershows how business, science, education and government are learning to use networked knowledge to understand more and make smarter decisions than they could when they had to rely only on books and experts.
The Edward C. and Mary S. Peple Library Lectureship annually brings leading American authors to speak about topics of interest to friends of the library and the community. The Peples were founders and charter members of Friends of Boatwright Memorial Library, the university’s main library containing more than half a million books, 100,000 bound periodicals and electronic resources. Edward Peple graduated from the university, returned to teach English and served as dean of the graduate school and associate provost. He retired in 1978.
