The Ohio Hockey Celebration will be held on
Sunday, April 19th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in the Arena District.
The event will feature an exhibit from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada. A portion of the exhibit will be dedicated to Ohio’s 80 year history of professional hockey.
The exhibit will also include a display of some of the NHL’s most prestigious awards for individual achievements—the Hart Memorial Trophy (MVP), Art Ross Trophy (Points)
and Maurice Richard Trophy (Goals). The event will also feature private collections of game worn jerseys and other hockey memorabilia. Inaugural members of the Columbus Blue Jackets Geoff Sanderson and Kevyn Adams will join former Cleveland Baron and Washington Capital Dennis Maruk and former Pittsburgh Penguin and Cleveland Lumberjack Jeff Christian at the event’s autograph session. In over 1000 NHL games, Sanderson tallied exactly 700 career points. After being traded by the Jackets, Adams went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes. Maruk, a member of Ohio’s first NHL team, the Cleveland Barons, scored
60 goals in 1981-82 as a member of the Washington Capitals. This remained a Capitals team record until Alex Ovechkin scored 65 goals last season. Maruk’s 136 points in that
same 1981-82 season is still a Capitals single season record and one of 3 seasons in his career in which he scored 90 or more points. Jeff Christian shows no signs of slowing entering his 20th season as a professional, finishing second in the Central Hockey League in scoring this past season. He won that league’s MVP award as a member of the Youngstown Steelhounds in 2006-07.
The event will also feature interactive games similar to those at the Hockey Hall of Fame allowing kids and adults to test their shooting and goaltending skills. Tickets for the event are available online at Ohio Hockey Celebration’s website and are $15 for adults and $10 for children. A portion of net proceeds from the event will go to the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation.
