Gong xi fa cai, xin nian kuai le! On Saturday, January 31, 2009, the rhythmic beat of drums and the powerful roars of lion dancers will usher in the “Year of the Ox” at the Chinese Community Center’s Lunar New Year Festival. This free community event offering food, fun, and festivities for the entire family attracts over 10,000 visitors each year.
The Opening Ceremony extravaganza, featuring the best of local talent as well as guest performers from Asia, will begin at 10:30am. The 20-minute performance will introduce nine unique cultural arts: Year of the Ox dance; dragon and lion dances; hula hoop and contortion acrobatics; Shaolin kungfu; ribbon dance; tai chi martial arts; and for the finale, the traditional “face changing” dance in which the performer rapidly twists and turns to switch from one masked image to another without the hands ever touching the face.
