A conference to educate and equip local agencies and individuals with more resources and best practice skills to more effectively provide services to elderly refugee clients
Elderly minority groups are becoming an increasingly prevalent part of our community. It'simportant to continue to learn how to provide effective and culturally appropriate services.
Our morning
session is open to anyone in the community interested in serving
elderly refugees, while our afternoon session is designed specifically
for all SW Idaho Area Agency on Aging existing and potential providers
to prepare for new contract guidelines in the Request for
Proposal process on July 1, 2009.

9:00-10:00
We are honored to have Leslye Boban, the Director for Boises newest refugee resettlement agency, the International Rescue Committee, share about specific refugee populations that currently reside or are being resettled in Boise. Shell also explain the process for our newest neighbors to be accepted entrance into Idaho.
10:30-11:15
Mikal Black RN, MSN, assistant professor in the Department of Nursing at Boise State University with a specialty in culture and international nursing, will discuss what her research has shown about increasing cultural competence among nurses. Mikal will describe the implications of diverse cultural beliefs and explain how to improve the quality of service care through different culturally competent approaches and models.
11:30-12:15
Daniela Kecman has been an interpreter for over 10 years for Bosnian refugees for resettlement agencies, St. Alphonsus Hospital and several medical clinics. She will share her extensive knowledge about how to effectively use interpreters to equip providers with knowledge to provide the best quality of service to non-English speaking clients.
12:30-1:30

Q&A Session featuring a panel of elderly refugees
1:45-2:45
Administrator for the Idaho Commission on Aging, Kim Wherry Toryanski,will discuss what the US Administration on Aging has dictated about serving minority populations, specifically in regards to the Older Americans Act. Contractors will learn how to meet updated federal guidelines in serving senior minorities.
3:00-4:00
The Director of the Area Agency on Aging, Lori Brelia, will address our current and potential service providers. She will discuss the upcoming Request for Proposal process for SAGE Community Resources and suggest specific ways agencies can adapt their practices to meet new contract requirements, prepare for the RFP process and be better equipped to serve refugees.
Anyone interested or involved in serving elderly refugees in the community is welcome and encouraged to attend the workshop, free of charge.
