John Sloan (1871-1951) moved to New York in 1904 as an already established illustrator and print maker, and spent the next forty-six years capturing life in the city. Interested in the everyday life of New Yorkers, Sloan created a series of etchings depicting the working class. Images of families sleeping on the roofs during hot summer nights, children playing in Washington Square Park, and commuters on the subway are typical of the artist’s subject matter. John Sloan’s New York presents 34 prints and drawings, created between 1904 and 1930, from this important figure, gathering the “slice of life” scenes that placed him at the forefront of twentieth century American art.

Life’s Pleasures: The Ashcan Artists' Brush with Leisure, 1895-1925
More than 70 paintings by Ashcan School painters Robert Henri, George Bellows, William Glackens and John Sloan will be on view at the New-York Historical Society starting November 28. Organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts, the showing focuses on these artists’ shared fascination with pastimes and the forms of recreation city dwellers managed to pursue in their precious leisure time around the turn of the century.
