The First Annual Clean Air, Clear Stars Music Festival – a new festival which aims to raise funds and create awareness for California's endangered Joshua Tree National Park, will take place July 6, 7 and 8 in historic Pioneertown, California at Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace. All proceeds raised will benefit Global Inheritance, a 501(c)3 organization that creates inspirational and educational programs for environmental awareness, with the goal of encouraging positive action for a sustainable future.
The three day benefit concert falls on the anniversary of a July 2006 wildfire, which was caused by lightning, then blazed through the high Mohave desert. Known as the Sawtooth fire, it burned for more than two weeks, spread across 61,000 acres, and destroyed 60 homes and 170 businesses in and around the Pioneertown area and the Joshua Tree National Park.
The Clean Air Clear Stars benefit concert will take place in the historic town whose very existence was threatened by this fire. Built in 1946 as a movie set for western films, including the movies of Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Annie Oakly, The Cisco Kid, and others, Pioneertown is home to the live music venue, Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace, as well as the Pioneertown Motel, which was once the sleeping quarters for the actors in these films, and whose grounds will now serve as the campgrounds for the three-day music festival. At only $25 for the full weekend concert pass (if purchased in advance – camping and other accommodations are to be purchased separately) Clean Air, Clear Stars expects to draw record crowds to the area and bring much-needed revenue to the town.
Motivated by a deep love for their favorite desert hideaway, a group of L.A.-based independent musicians and their friends began work on what was meant to be a small one-day benefit show. As word spread, many additional musicians, along with sponsors such as Vacancy Records, KCRW, L.A. City Beat, Brookes Company, Imeem and Joshua Tree Music offered to get involved, and the event quickly grew into a three-day music festival and camp-out. Other festival highlights will include DJs, bowling at the Pioneertown Bowl, special late-night after-parties, events at the campground, as well as a silent auction to win prizes donated by Amoeba Music, Future Brands, Sin City, Distinkive Design, Vacancy Records, and others!
"I think festivals designed by artists are so much more passionate and interesting and than the ones designed by institutions, which is why I decided to get involved. I'm extremely excited by the line-up of amazing bands – this is sure to be a magical experience for all." stated Festival Co-Organizer, Mary Patton. She, along with Co-Organizers, musicians Tommy Dietrick (Brian Jonestown Massacre, Sky Parade), and Jason Anchondo (The Warlocks, Spindrift) along with a group of eager volunteers began to organize their vision of the ultimate benefit music event, choosing some of the most interesting and provocative artists they found personally inspiring. The diverse selection of indie and underground musicians range from acoustic artists to psychedelic, stoner rock and shoegaze artists …and in the grand spirit of Pioneertown's western heritage, Spindrift's psychedelic spaghetti western sounds will also echo through the desert as part Saturday's line-up. Together, these artists hope to create an eye-opening and mind-expanding experience under the Clear Stars of the delicate Mohave desert.

About the Endangered Joshua Tree National Park:
Joshua Tree National Park ranks as one of the most endangered national parks in the U.S. according to environmental groups. Relying on a particular set of weather conditions and well-timed rains, Joshua trees have managed to survive for centuries here in the Mohave desert, the only place on the planet these large yuccas can be found. The slightest disruption in this fragile eco-system would devastate this delicate desert and potentially destroy all of its native inhabitants, including these trees which are necessary to the survival of a variety of wildlife.
Scientists recently released a 67 page chapter on North American climate effects, as part of an international report on climate change impact, which indicates that the dry areas of the American Southwest will be among the hardest hit. Desert ecosystems will be the first to experience the impact of water shortages which will reduce some plant and insect populations, and in turn accelerate the fire cycle. The increased greenhouse gasses may also have major implications for the biodiversity and health of the desert by altering the balance of native grasses. Elevated air pollutants in the form of nitric oxide (NO) and the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (NO2) combined with accelerated C02 emissions have especially influenced the proliferation of an invasive weed known as red brome which is suspected to have helped flame recent fires in the region. Red Brome is capable of carrying fire across the bare zones between shrubs. Prior to the proliferation of these exotic weeds, there were few plant species that could create continuous ground cover, so desert shrub ecosystems did not historically burn.
