This course will examine the outstanding visual culture of France during the 19th century. Beginning with the far from orthodox Neo-Classicism of Ingres, it will examine his achievement, the critical reception of his work and his lasting influence. The major transformation of Paris under Napoleon III by Baron Haussmann will then be considered as well as other architectural highlights of the later 19th century. The final section of the course will be devoted to the Impressionists, Symbolists, Rodin and the era of the Belle poque. Details of this event may be subject to change.
